Fontana del Nettuno
The Fountain of Neptune, also called “Biancone”, is located in the Piazza della Signoria. The assignment of building this fountain was given the famous Renaissance sculptor Bartolomeo Bandinelli, but shortly after he had finished a model of the fountain died. The realization of the fountain was quickly given to the sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati and his assistant Giambologna.
The sculptors of this fountain paid great attention to detail as well as significance when building this fountain. The figure of Neptune stands at the center of the fountain on top of a high pedestal. The pedestal is decorated with beautiful interpretations of the Greek sea monsters named Scilla and Cariddi.
With the help of many other talented sculptors were realized many incredible statues of bronze river gods, laughing satyrs and sea horses emerging from the water placed on the perimeter of the fountain basin. This made a great impression on the people of Florence. The fountain was used in the future many times as a model for other fountains.
During the years this fountain has suffered a lot of damage. As of 2007 the fountain has been completely restored.
Today the original statue of Neptune does not still stand on the pedestal. It has been moved to Italy's National Museum and been replaced with a replica.
